“Laurence Jack - Ladies Manager”
It’s now less than a week to go until the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Women’s Football League begins (BHWFL) and Hitchin Belles Ladies final pre-season friendlies took place.
First up were perennial Division 1 side Sherrardswood Ladies. Objectives for the team were to play at a high tempo and have the desire to win the ball first and then look to play forward. It was Sherrardswood though who began the match in the ascendancy pushing the Belles back into their own half. It was then the senior players in the team took control and encouraged and cajoled the younger ones to stay calm and composed. In turn they got the ball down and played their brand of football which saw them take complete control of the first half. Second half a much more even affair as both sides created opportunities. Belles worked hard to keep their structure and maintain intensity limiting Sherrardswood’s forwards to speculative efforts.
Overall, it was a good work out for the Belles and allowed players to play in different positions and for them to understand the different responsibilities.
Pleasing from a managers perspective was the organisation throughout the team to realise and adapt to changing patterns of play plus increasing the intensity and tempo of the match.
Our last pre-season friendly was against a new team to join the league and that was Welwyn Pegasus Ladies (Azures). Belles played very well in the first half with good possession and control of the ball. They hit the danger areas of the attacking third which allowed the support players in those areas to take the opportunity. Fitness levels were good with all players trying to get forward and when out of possession quickly made the recovery back. Second half saw some changes in personnel and playing positions which upset the balance of the team but like the previous match, those players adapted well. A much closer second half gave the Ladies a much needed work out but their quality and experience shone through to see the Belles home.
Overall a very good pre-season with statistics of:

This coming Sunday (10th September) will be the Belles first match of the season and it’s a local derby against a team we have never played before and one that has been around for many years: Hitchin Town Ladies. It will be a great match and a fantastic advert for Women’s football to have two great sides from the Town.
Kick-off is 14:00 at Swinburne Avenue, Hitchin.
