Hitchin Belles Ladies v Woburn and Wavendon Ladies Blues

By Paul Dean

24th Sept

How Belles Ladies did not win this match beggars belief after a blistering 30 minutes when they found themselves 3 – 0 up. It was a very one-sided affair in the first half as Belles got off to fantastic start. The passing and movement was a joy to watch as the Ladies exploited space all over the pitch. Wave after wave of attack on the home goal saw some brave defending and a goalkeeper who was determined to hold fort on her own. Deadlock was broken after 10 minutes when Keira out wide right got to the by-line, crossed to the edge of the 18 yard area for Chloe K to smash home. Hitchin were dominant and soon extended their lead when Gemma S was fouled 20 yards from goal. Up stepped Amy Jack to curl the ball over the wall and crash in off the underside of the bar. The Ladies continued to exert their quality and no surprise when Chloe K notched her second after out sprinting the defence to slot home. Hitchin’s desire, pace and intensity dropped and they were duly punished minutes before half time as Woburn scored to reduce the deficit.

Substitutions at half time due to illness and injury upset the balance and Woburn scored two quick goals to level in the first 15 minutes as Hitchin struggled to regain composure. A tactical switch gave Hitchin control again but it was Woburn who scored on the counter-attack to take the lead for the first time. The ladies though showed great character and pushed forward. Woburn tried to hold out for the win but Hitchin’s dominance finally paid off as an out swinging corner from CJ was met by Charlie P to powerfully head home. Minutes remained and Hitchin were the only team to try and win the match and should have done but for an exceptional save from the home goalkeeper to deny Chloe K a hat-trick to ensure the score remained 4 – 4 at the end.

This was definitely a case of two points lost as Hitchin’s superiority was not translated in to goals despite the many attempts.

Player of the match went to Chloe Keller who could not hide her disappointment after the match “Totally dominated and to come away with a point is a little disappointing. Positive was the togetherness of the team to salvage a draw. Thought we were going to snatch it at the end but for a fine save”
